Nanaye – Smelling Salt Review

nanayeSmelling Salt is a mixture of rock beats mixed with electronica accompaniments creating a strange fusion of the two sounds into a very dynamic album. The lead singer has a very calming soprano voice which plays a dichotomy with the music, which also isn’t aggressive, but very multilayered.

Some of the tracks carry that ethereal tone to them and still contain aspects of the rock that forms the base of the songs. I’m curious to know how they would sound live, but the album is from 2006. Even though the songs flow on different wavelengths, the cohesive nature of the album can’t be discounted.

It’s not entirely different, but something one-step in another direction for Japanese indie rock.
