Fullarmor – Cataract Review

full armorMath-rock is quickly becoming my favorite genre of music to release from Japan. The staggering amount of bands that play this type of music overshadows the United States pretty easily in my opinion. Fullarmor’s 2008 album is much more in the vein of actual band instrumentals without a lot of electronica backing it up, somewhat like Don Caballero in the United States.

Even through seven songs, Fullarmor presents such a strong image with their music, I’m surprised that there is so much restraint in the playing of the music. It opens itself up to improvisation in so many places. Comprised of what sounds like guitar, bass, drum kit, and keyboards only, Cataract is a different type of math-rock album, but still impressive.

Math-rock continues to survive impressively in Japan.
