Oba Masahiro – Prot Review

protI think that it is incredibly difficult to create ambient electronica that doesn’t focus on raging bass beats and synthetic drumming. Oba Masahiro’s Prot is an album that uses silence more than dynamic tones, something that I find immensely impressive.

It’s not electronica in terms of dance music, but like World’s End Girlfriend, it focuses on the little moments during the songs rather than huge overcast rhythms. Keeping these kind of tracks interesting is probably very difficult. I know whenever I try to create simple drum beats, I think of all the other music that I have listened to and think I’m just copying it.

Prot somehow sounds similar to other artists who play in the similar vein, but is all their own. While Prot is an EP, there’s plenty to digest in the music.
