Nujabes – Modal Soul Review

There is a special feeling that I get with Modal Soul. It was the first album that I heard from Nujabes, and the first Japanese hip-hop album that I found wasn’t full of pop. The fourteen songs on Modal show the excellent abilities of the artist.

In many ways, the samples he used to create the songs are all special because the beats do not overshadow the melody, creating a relaxed hip-hop feeling with the music. It’s difficult to describe his music because it was very different than other artists in the landscape. I do think that his music is an important point for Japanese music overall, not just hip-hop.

His work flowed outside of the genre and honestly, when it comes to Japanese hip-hop of this flavor, there isn’t anyone equal to his abilities. It’s sad that he died in an accident in early 2010.
