양동근 (YDG) – Best of Best Review

I didn’t know of 양동근 until I saw him perform during a music show. I thought his performance was good, but the song was lacking, mainly in terms of him actually rapping. Best of Best changed my mind in that there is some real talent, but it’s covered by the performance.

Covered by the performance meaning the urban thug image that 양동근 is presenting takes away from the delivery of the lyrics and creates this comical image for the performances even though the songs are good. The focus is simpler samples, but pushing a harder bass beat which rises and falls. The delivery isn’t slow, but it doesn’t meet the speed or preciseness of other Korean rappers.

Best of Best is another type of Korean rap, using the thug image that used to be very popular in the United States, but still containing a lot of pop elements in the songs. It’s a standard album, if less time was spent on the image and more on the content, it would be hard to beat.
