I’m a fan of 김보경.
This was her audition song on SuperStar K where she was eliminated, but the public wanted a realized recording of the song due to her potential.
I think she has a voice similar to Kelly Clarkson, and there is a power that she hasn’t hit yet. The song is one of the earliest in her career and she has a long way to go before she really finds her voice, but these two versions show how well her voice can meet different styles.
Give it a try, and then listen to her other songs.
Moving from the most recent release to the older music seems to be a trend for me right now. 김보경 is one of the upcoming artists that I’m keeping my eye on. Even though she’s slightly entrenched in Korean pop and that market, her mini-album Growing, I saw immense potential.
Her first mini-album, The First Day, focuses more on her vocals than her first release. The rock ballad theme that goes through the release fits her voice well. The one thing I noticed during her audition on Superstar K was that her voice wasn’t the most on point in melody, but there was something when she sang that came out.
The First Day hints on this special talent, but doesn’t hit the same emotion that the audition did. This release showed a good start, that’s for sure.
I found 김보경 ‘s second EP before I was told she was on Superstar K. I was then surprised of how much her physical appearance was changed from her looks on the show to her stage appearance.
Either way, her voice is what has impressed me. A mixture of pop rock and pop, Growing does show her vocal abilities over a variety of tracks. Personally, I think her voice works best with either pop rock or ballads rather than some of the more pop that the album also contains.
Her voice is comparable to the delivery of Kelly Clarkson (an unfortunate comparison) and I see her being able to go in a lot of different directions. I do feel her singing might be overshadowed by the industry who already seen to favor her looks rather than voice.
Listen for the voice rather than the prepared image.
